This collection contains fifty physical education objectives, related sample items, and directions for administering and scoring, and is divided into four categories. The first measures movement skills: body awareness, perception, locomotion, axial skills, balance, and gross motor coordination in games and sports. The second category measures posture, components of physical fitness, and their development. Understanding one's own physical capabilities and cooperating when participating in group activities is assessed in section three, and the final category measures participation in and knowledge of recreational opportunities. Objectives are arranged in order of increasing complexity. Levels of difficulty are sometimes specified as a guide, but they do not necessarily correspond to grade levels. The collection is designed to incorporate both the traditional and contemporary approach to the teaching of physical education. For example, there is an attempt to combine the teaching of commonly used sports skills with the teaching of the motor coordination skills that sports demonstrate. Nearly all of the items are performance tests--requiring demonstration of motor skill, strength or physical development--rather than paper and pencil tests. (CP)
