Tradition and Innovation: General Education and the Reintegration of the University. A Columbia Report.
Belknap, Robert L.; Kuhns, Richard
Curriculum development efforts at Columbia University occurring as a result of social changes and four years of seminar discussions are analyzed, and the seminar transactions and resulting programs discussed. A detailed description is given of Columbia's General Education Program, established after World War I. It is shown how and why the original program has evolved to meet changing student needs. Courses in the humanities, the junior-senior Colloquium, and later courses in Oriental Civilization and Oriental Humanities are described, as are more recent experiments with general education seminars, teaching companies, team teaching, and the special seminars that reintegrate undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. A 40-page appendix of reading lists and selected course outlines is included. (Author/MSE)
