Toward Education for Effective Social Welfare Administrative Practice.
Dumpson, James R.; And Others
An investigation of the feasibility of a project designed to improve the effectiveness of social welfare administration is described. The study sought to determine what action might be taken for the development and implementation of curricula in social service management at interested graduate schools of social work. Literature in the field was surveyed to obtain an overview of current issues in administration and management, and a nationwide mail survey of all graduate schools of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education was undertaken to secure current statistical data descriptive of graduate social work education for administrative practice. Interviews were held with members of faculties in schools of social work with established concentrations in administration. In addition, information was obtained from schools of business administration, particularly those in universities without a school of social work, but that indicated a commitment to preparation of personnel for effective management in the fields of human services. A review was also made of activities underway at the Council on Social Work Education in the area of administration, and consultations were held with the executive director and his staff. Information is presented on dual degree programs, doctoral degree programs, student characteristics, employment, recruitment, faculty, grant support, interdepartmental study, and administration specialization courses. Priority needs, recommendations, and implications for future action based on reactions of four individuals are presented. (SW)
