A self-instructional unit on eating habits and customs in Germany is presented for the high school student studying second-year German. Notes to the teacher outline general goals of the unit, specific objectives, additional activities, equipment, and student evaluation. The general goals are: to be able to eat a meal in Germany without offending or attracting undue attention and to develop an appreciation for customs that are different. Additional activities include (1) teaching a friend how to conduct oneself at a German meal; (2) making a list of German expressions needed to get through a meal successfully; (3) explaining American table manners to a German; and (4) suggesting possible reasons for the development of the table customs either in America or Germany. Student evaluation includes four self-quizzes, one of which is a cross-word puzzle. Illustrations are included in the unit. (SW)
