A Normative Study of the Assistant Principalship in Selected Minnesota Secondary Schools.
Hentges, Joseph T.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the duties and responsibilities assigned to assistant principals in select Minnesota secondary schools. The objectives were to determine (1) the degree of responsibility delegated to the assistant principal for each duty assigned, (2) the level of authority involved in the completion of the delegated duty, (3) the degree of importance the duty had to the proper functioning of the school, as viewed by the respondents, (4) differences evident between the roles of assistant principals in junior and senior high schools, (5) differences evident between the roles of assistant principals in urban, rural, and suburban schools, and (6) differences in the perceptions of principals and assistant principals relative to the responsibilities, authority, and importance of the duties delegated to the assistant principal. The study concluded that assistant principals in Minnesota secondary schools are involved in practically all aspects of the administrative process and that most of their duties involve shared responsibility.
