A study utilizing source credibility and homophily as a basis for analysis was designed to examine the conceptualization of the ideal political candidate. In addition, this conceptualization was examined across selected voter characteristics to determine if it varied on that basis. Questionnaires were administered to 390 college students to measure the perceived credibility, homophily, and dogmatism of the ideal male political candidate. Demographic information was also elicited for each student. An analysis of the results revealed that the ideal political candidate was perceived to be extremely competent, extremely high in character, quite composed and sociable, slightly extroverted, slightly similar to the voters in attitudes and beliefs, and neutral in similarity in terms of background and personality. Furthermore, the findings indicated that this conceptualization did not vary as a function of voter sex, political party affiliation, liberal/conservative tendencies, or dogmatism. (Author/FL)
