In a series of national polls conducted in 1975-1976 that had people record their activities over a 24-hour time period, researchers found that on a typical day more people read a newspaper than watched television news programs. Older adults were more likely to use both news media, while young adults were more likely to use no news medium. Over the last ten years, there has been no decline in newspaper use among persons aged 18 to 24, but there has been a decline, ranging from 2% to 13%, among older age groups. These results suggest that newspapers' current strategy of catering more to their youngest readers fails to address the greatest source of attrition--the older reader. (Author/RL)
