Marriage, childbearing, and employment patterns of women initially surveyed during their entrance to college in 1961 and subsequently surveyed in 1965, 1971, and 1974-5 were investigated. Subjects were questioned on marital status, number and timing of children in the family, employment patterns and shifts, job search patterns, preferred housework and employment activities, and, where applicable, reasons for not working. Results indicate that: (1) being married was associated with relatively high job satisfaction; (2) less than 33% of the married women and over 80% of the single women were employed full-time; (3) employed married women were more career-and achievement-oriented and reported higher levels of intellectual and social self-confidence than unemployed married women; and (4) only a small minority of married women indicated that marriage was an obstacle to their current employment.
