Literature on the goals, barriers, and trends in inservice education is reviewed here, and criteria for development of an inservice program as well as a checklist of possible activities are provided. Specific activities outlined are: courses; workshops; conferences; exchanges and secondments; comparative educational tours; study leave and study programs for individuals; consultancies by individuals or panels of experts; production and dissemination of training kits, related materials, and general information for distribution to schools; displays and exhibitions; support for innovative programs and research by groups or individuals; support for teachers assisting pupils in creative development of materials; development of inservice institutions; and support for research into inservice activities.
