Since 1975, the Student Flow Project of the Hawaii community colleges, an ongoing longitudinal study, has examined the progress of students through the community college system. It complements enrollment data with information on non-continuing students and graduates. The Project consists of three basic components: (1) admissions, which deals with the characteristics of entering students, classifying them as applicants, admittees, registrants, and "no shows"; (2) enrollment, which provides demographic data on students who continue to enroll for five semesters after entry; and (3) exit, which provides data on students for each of five semesters who leave the community college either as non-continuing students or graduates. In all, 50 reports, focusing principally on Fall 1975 entering students, have been prepared as part of the Project. On the basis of these reports, a recommendation was made to continue to study student progression and persistence--i.e., to study every fifth year entering group for six semesters. The proposed plan for studying Fall 1979 entering students includes the following reports: applications, admissions, and registration; survey of entering students; non-continuing student survey; student progression each semester; analysis of persistence; graduates; and employer survey.
