Yes, You Can Have a Health Service in a Community College.
Busky, Henry F.
The health services program at Prince George's Community College is oriented toward preventative and educational services as well as referral and the treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. This compilation of statements of intent, forms, and brief descriptive essays covers various aspects of the program. The qualities of a college health nurse, the goals and objectives of the position, and budgets for staffing and equipment of a health service are delineated. The daily activities of the health room include health counseling on a one-to-one basis, first aid for minor injuries and illnesses, emergency readiness, and providing handicapped services. In addition, the following programs are provided: fall semester health screening, blood pressure awareness, weight control, health awareness week, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, video presentations to instruct students and staff in responding to emergencies, blood mobile, physicals for varsity teams, and the Health Education and Service Club. Job descriptions for a supervisor of health services, staff nurse, medical consultant, part-time relief nurse, and health room assistant are included as are evaluation forms for appraising staff performance by students, counselors, and supervisors. A bibliography, outline of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act, confidential student health form, nursing health report form, and a report on a college health nurses workshop are appended. (MB)
