Design Exploration for Talented Elementary Students. Evaluation 1975-76. Alexandria Public Schools Program for the Gifted and Talented.
Morra, Frank, Jr.
Presented is the 1975-76 evaluation report of the Alexandria Program for the Gifted and Talented, a multi-dimensional approach to the differentiated education of children in grades 4 through 6 with exceptional abilities in both the cognitive and artistic areas. It is explained that the evaluation study consisted of four activities: replication of the student testing program, replication of the parent survey, development and execution of a survey of regular classroom teachers, and design and execution of a comparison study. Methodology and results for each of the four activities are considered separately. Listed among conclusions are that the program is performing well beyond the stated standards in academic achievement and creativity; that the students were found to have generally healthy, normal self concepts which changed very little over the academic year, in accordance with the program design; and that the comparison study gave specific support to the program's selection criteria in the area of academic achievement. Appended materials include a description of instruments used in the study, an explanation of statistical terms, a summary of parent comments, and specimen copies of parent and teacher survey forms.
