In considering the possibility of certifying specialists in speech communication, it is helpful to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of credentialling standards, to survey certification procedures in other professions, and to identify the steps that would have to be taken to begin a certification program. Two advantages of certification include insuring competence and helping teachers obtain employment. Some disadvantages of certification are: standards must be established, a means for meeting the standards must be devised, assurances must be provided that those certified can perform competently, means for dealing with complaints must be established, and a process of recertification must be developed. Many professions including medicine, law, and psychology have developed certification procedures, most of which include standards for graduate schools and for individuals. Steps required in speech communication for developing a certification process include exploring the issues raised, establishing standards for doctoral programs, and exploring skill evaluation. (TJ)
