Adult Involvement in the Social Maps of Youth: The Transition from Elementary to Secondary School.
Garbarino, James; And Others
The "social maps" of 89 youngsters as they made the transition from sixth to eighth grades (elementary to junior high school) were explored. Data were gathered through interviews with the youngsters in sixth and again in eighth grade. Subjects' mothers were also interviewed at both times. Interviews focused on the child's social network as perceived by the child and by the child's mother. Of special interest were the age and role characteristics of the people named. The results indicate that mothers see more adults in children's social networks than do the children themselves. Both children and their mothers report more adult involvement in eighth grade than in sixth grade. Relatively few differences are attributable to gender, ordinal position, socioeconomic status, family structure, or stage of physical development. (Author)
