Assertiveness Training and Cross-Cultural Perspectives: South Asian Women in Canada.
Naidoo, Josephine C.
Presented in this document is a cross-cultural study dealing with the role of socialization, self perceptions, and achievement orientation of South Asian and Anglo Sanxon women living in Ontario, Canada. These dimensions are explored within the context of selected cultural, religious, and philosophical variables prevailing in the two cultures. Some of the factors examined and compared include male-female relationships, family orientation, self concept, selected religious values, sense of accomplishment, and achievement aspirations. These factors are further examined in the context of adolescent role and achievement socialization. Reflections of the respondents on particular questions provide cross-cultural perspectives on such issues as the assertiveness in women, the realization of potential, and contribution to the larger society. Insight is provided into the acculturation of a non-western subgroup into the cultural pluralism which characterizes Canadian society. Tables illustrating data collected and a list of references are included. (Author/EB)
