Social change in the United States has prompted frequent observations that civic values, attitudes, and conduct are in a state of disrepair. One of the most often mentioned solutions to this problem is a resurgence of informed civic responsibility. A responsible citizen of a democratic society is interpreted as one who believes in the worth of the individual, the principle of freedom, and government by elected representatives. Behaviors of a responsible citizen include voluntary restraint of self interest when it conflicts with the common interest, resisting perversions of political power, working for elevation of qualified people to public office, and supporting passage of just and fair laws and policies. Several educational approaches can be taken to promote the development of citizens imbued with knowledge and commitment to democratic values. These approaches include discussing openly totalitarian regimes without denigrating the peoples or cultural achievements of any nation, practicing democratic values in schools, accepting the inherent limitations and failures of democratic institutions, stimulating interest in political philosophy, and studying life stories of individuals who exemplify the authentic spirit of democracy.
