COED Transactions, Vol. X, No. 10, October 1978. Simulation of a Sampled-Data System on a Hybrid Computer.
Mitchell, Eugene E., Ed.
The simulation of a sampled-data system is described that uses a full parallel hybrid computer. The sampled data system simulated illustrates the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) discrete control of a continuous second-order process representing a stirred-tank. The stirred-tank is simulated using continuous analog components, while PID controller is simulated using discrete components that generate the sampling frequency and permit the recording or display of the system response. The simulation is totally inter-active enabling examination (in the repetitive operation mode) of the system response to changes of sampling frequency, controller gains and process-time constants. A software PID algorithm is also available to illustrate a form of direct digital control of the stirred-tank. The system simulation is sufficiently simple to introduce under-graduate students to some of the problems of sampled-data systems. (Author/BB)
