Digging In. . .Tools for Value Education in Camping. Camp Director's Handbook.
Glashagel, Jerry; And Others
The handbook is designed for use by the camp director, program director, and unit director, to help staff work effectively with campers on every-day values clarification, learning, and decision making. After an introductory discussion of seven key concepts in value education, the handbook is divided into seven chapters focusing on acquiring and training staff, conducting the camp, and evaluating the session, so as to make good value education a significant part of the total camp experience. Chapter 1 is a discussion of value awareness in staff recruiting and selection. Chapter 2 contains suggestions of strategies for dealing with value concerns during staff orientations. The third chapter presents activities for training the staff to help campers look at values and develop decision-making skills. Included is a sample 2-day staff training session schedule. Chapter 4 contains 37 specific value education strategies for use with campers in a variety of camp settings. Each is presented with objectives, process, materials, time, and setting. Ideas for involving the campers' families in value discussions before, during, and after the camp are given in chapter 5. Chapter 6 contains value-education issues for the staff to consider in self-evaluations. Chapter 7 is a brief, annotated reference list. (SB)
