In the first of two studies of the data processing program at Johnson County Community College (Kansas), students enrolled in data processing classes during spring 1978 were surveyed to collect basic demographic data and to obtain opinions about the program. There were approximately as many men as women enrolled and the median age was 25, slightly higher than the overall college median of 22. About one-fourth of the students had bachelor's degrees and another fourth had attended another college. About one-third planned to receive an Associate of Arts degree; slightly more than 40% planned to take only certain courses. Overall, instruction and curriculum were rated better than the equipment and facilities, however, more "hands on" experience was desired. In the second study, area employers and students were surveyed to assess the adequacy of existing data processing course offerings. There was interest in courses related to both large and small systems. About 25% of the employers required an Associate Degree, while 10% required a Bachelor's. Half required from one to two years experience. Persons with four or more years experience were most in demand. Approximately 56% of the employers had some interest in using students for part-time employment. Teleprocessing was the major interest of both employers and students.
