The needs and challenges of intermediate-level language courses and the beneficial effects of authentic language experiences are considered, and five essays are presented which explore revitalization of the Classics and ways of introducing authentic language via film, theater, music, and student exchanges. "New contents" in second languaqe courses refers to various ways of introducing authentic linguistic material and cultural experiences. Guidelines for introducing authenticity at the intermediate level are offered in "Coalescence...or Getting It Together," by Rebecca M. Valette. Rationale for and types of interdisciplinary study and how to start an interdisciplinary program are covered in "Interdisciplinary Study at the Intermediate Level," by Cathy Linder. Advantages and limitations of films and use of the film in the classroom are covered in "Film in the Second Language Class," by Gene S. Kupferschmid. Preparation, study, performance of the play, and attending professional performances are covered in "Theater and Language Learning," by Elaine V. Uzan. Opera, folksongs and songs of protest, and music and student radio programs are covered in "Exploring the Musical Heritage," by Pietro Frassica. "The German American Partnership Program: A Case Study," by Friedrich Winterscheidt and Gesa Kandeler, is presented, and the state of the Classics and some programs at the elementary, secondary, and college level are discussed in "The Revitalization of the Classics," by Helene B.
