California School Energy Concepts, 1978.
Askin, Ralph J.; And Others
This publication is one of the major efforts of a project designed to promote energy conservation in California schools. Suggestions are provided that can be adapted at individual school facilities to reduce energy consumption. The guide also focuses on the major concepts of the new state standards for energy conservation for new nonresidential buildings and contains explanations of how these standards affect schools. The introduction examines the evolution of architectural techniques in attempting to understand the nation's energy dilemma. This is followed by discussions of traditional fuels, "new" fuels, and fuels of the future. Suggestions are offered for school districts and architects to consider in planning new school facilities. Suggestions for improvements in existing schools are divided into those that may require minor expenditures and those that may require major expenditures. In the appendices are tables with information about solar projects, and about some other nonsolar energy conservation projects; tips on hiring outside consultants; components of a good energy management program; and section drawings of schools that show effective uses of a number of energy conservation measures. A glossary and a selected bibliography complete the guide. (Author/MLF)
