The preparation of appropriate and relevant instructional materials is essential to effective instruction. Instructional materials, usually in the form of a comprehensive course of study or training plan, should be based on a carefully planned, organized, and conducted analysis procedure. This analysis procedure may be used for the identification and selection of learning tasks in any subject matter area and for any level of instruction. To ensure that the analysis is carried out efficiently and that an appropriate course of study or training plan will result, this report suggests using a systematic approach. A systematic approach, including feedback provisions and a set of sequential components, will result in a usuable set of instructional materials when completed. This book is divided into three parts: preparation and description, identification and selection, and development and application of instructional materials. The three parts are presented in such a way that a student can move from a position of having very little knowledge about analysis and instructional material development to the completion of a comprehensive course of study or training plan designed for a specific instructional setting.
