The Nonsexist Communicator.
Persing, Bobbye Sorrels
Designed as an aid in eradicating sexism in communication, this manual attempts to promote an understanding of sexism, to deepen the commitment to eliminate it, and to develop a nonsexist communication style. The first chapter presents the concept of nonsexist communication and then introduces the idea of reverse sexism. It includes an analysis of a reverse sexism story and suggests many nonsexist communication techniques. Chapters two through five provide methods for overcoming sexism in such forms of written communication as letters, memoranda, reports, corporate and administrative manuals, policy and procedural statements, job information instruments, and employee information publications. In addition, these chapters present methods for correcting any sexist written communication. The final chapter extends nonsexist principles into the oral and nonverbal media. Each chapter concludes with exercises designed to increase awareness of sexism. The first of two appendixes contains a set of guidelines for converting sexist materials into nonsexist communication and a list of nonsexist words and phrases. The second appendix is a selected bibliography of publications related to communication sexism. (FL)
