Experience Based Career Education Project Administered by Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Van Dusseldorp, Ralph A.
The third-party evaluation of the second year of the Iowa Central Community College Experience Based Career Education (EBCE) Project was based on examination of project records, interviews with project staff, student and resource persons, questionnaires completed by students, parents and resource persons, and test data collected on students at the beginning and end of each semester. The program served 172 students from 23 rural Iowa high schools. The evaluation instruments used were: the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills for Mathematics concepts and applications and reading comprehension; the Career Maturity Inventory, evaluating attitude, self-appraisal, occupational information, goal selection, planning, and problem solving; and Student Attitude Survey, measuring attitudes towards learning, career, self and others; and a Socialization Profile. In addition, at the end of the semester student attitude questionnaire, parent opinion survey, and a resource person opinion survey were used. Comparison of pre- and posttest scores for the EBCE students showed statistically significant gains in all three basic skill areas measured (mathematics concepts and application and reading comprehension). The students gained in five of the six areas measured by the Career Maturity Inventory (attitude, occupational information, goal selection, planning and problem solving). They made statistically significant gains in attitude toward learning, careers, and self. (Survey data and questionnaires are appended.) (CT)
