Mathematics: Texas Assessment of Essential Objectives.
Texas Education Agency, Austin.
Results of a survey using a criterion referenced test of mathematics for a large sample of sixth and eleventh grade students throughout Texas are reported in detail. Details of the sampling design and of the test development are reported elsewhere. Results are reported in terms of the percent of students correctly answering three out of four items for each of 12 objectives at sixth grade and 11 objectives at eleventh grade. These results are reported for the state as a whole and separately for a number of categories, as follows: by 20 geographic regions; three ethnic groups (black, Mexican American, and other); sex; type of school district (urban, rural, etc); family economic status; per pupil expenditure in school districts; special characteristics of student programs; and home factors assumed to be related to educational achievement (language spoken in the home, reading materials, time watching television, homework, parents' education, and students' educational aspirations). Major findings are summarized. Appendices list essential mathematics objectives; percent of students mastering objectives by all category groups; copies of forms used to collect the data; and labels and definitions for categories used in classifying data.
