Navajo Education in Action: The Rough Rock Demonstration School.
Roessel, Robert A., Jr.
Designed to serve as a guide, a stimulus, and a path for other schools desiring to control their education and that of their children, this book has two objectives: to tell the Rough Rock story--the origin, growth, and development of the demonstration school, and especially current events in 1976; and to provide a guide to other communities who wish to control the education of their children. The contents are divided into two sections. Section one discusses: an overview or history of Rough Rock Demonstration School; local control, the Rough Rock School Board, PL 93-638, and interviews; and Navajo emphasis, i.e., general observations, Rough Rock clinic, Kitsilee School, etc. Section two includes: (1) general information, personnel, philosophy, enrollment, current finances, and a ten year overview; (2) the three schools--elementary, middle, and community high school; (3) other programs; (4) key areas, focusing on relationships with the Navajo Tribe, Bureau of Indian Affairs, United States Public Health Service, United States Congress, and the Office of Education; and (5) interviews and summary evaluations with the staff and students conclude the book. In conclusion, the document emphasizes a unique concept in community development and local control of Indian education that shows great faith in Indian people and gives them direct control over their education.
