This document was designed to serve as a guide for coordinators and administrators of cooperative vocational education programs in the Hawaii community colleges. An introductory chapter outlines the purpose, definition, methods of instruction, and criteria for cooperative vocational education as well as advantages of such programs to students, the college, employers, and the community. Subsequent chapters discuss the following: the role and tasks of the program coordinator; selection of training stations, including focus on federal regulations, identification of suitable stations, selection criteria, and the purpose of training stations; principles and values of training agreements and plans; placement of students, including benefits, alternative methods of placement, and suggestions if students' jobs are terminated; purpose and frequency of coordinator visits; related instructional considerations such as the role of the coordinator as instructor, competency areas, instructional units, and student evaluation; the functions of advisory committees; use of public relations including the communication media, potential audiences, and promotion activities; legal responsibilities of vocational education as related to federal and state regulations; and methods of evaluation.
