Left handed people have had bad publicity throughout history, and the resulting myths and disadvantages of left handedness have often not been properly dealt with in the classroom. Our language itself maintains a bias against the left, and many other cultures have defined the left as disreputable. Today's life style also provides many physical disadvantages, e.g. appliances and tools designed for right handers, etc. The school environment places social and emotional pressures on the lefties. Researchers disagree as to the the genetic, environmental, or brain organization origins of handedness, but it is clear that teachers should not attempt to change the handedness of students. The methods teachers use to deal with handedness should include observing students, modifying the classroom environment and writing program, and providing models. (DS)
