In order to determine the characteristics of continuing education instructors at St. Petersburg Junior College, as well as their professional development interests and attitudes toward the college, a survey was administered to the 125 instructors and yielded an 82% response rate. The study showed: (1) the most typical instructor was a white female, age 44, holding a bachelor's degree; (2) keeping abreast of new discipline developments and gaining greater depth of knowledge ranked as the most important professional development needs; (3) fringe benefits and merit pay were seen as the most important incentives for the instructors; and (4) the teachers rated "friendly" as the best descriptor of the working environment. The study results suggest the necessity of: recognizing the part-time faculty as an important segment of the total staff; coordinating goals of staff development programs with those of the institution and instructors; initiating a varied format of development programs; researching existing programs at other colleges; considering motivation factors, along with hygiene factors, to stimulate interest in development activities; and including more minority group instructors when staffing new activities.
