Project BITE (Business-Industry-Training-Education) was conducted to determine if career decisions of inner-city high school students can be influenced by career training in the areas of career information, career exploration, and job development. The study was also planned to provide information about how schools can achieve maximum benefits from exposure of students to the world of work through cooperation with and assistance of business, industry, and the community. Twenty-nine students were enrolled in BITE classes at two inner-city high schools in the Inglewood (California) Unified School District. Two control group classes of twenty-five students each were also identified. Students in both the BITE classes and the control classes had been identified as having "no vocational choice" prior to the start of the program. The classes consisted of five days of special study devoted to each of the fifteen modules developed around different occupational clusters. Field trips and resource speakers were utilized in addition to classroom activities. Each student was given a pre- and posttest to determine his/her attitudes and feelings toward making a career choice and entering the world of work and to determine the student's knowledge about occupations and decisions relevant to choosing a career. The results indicated that the average BITE student rasied his/her score on both the attitude and competency scales by twenty percentage points during the semester, while the average control student increased his/her score by one-half of one percentage point during the semester.
