Implications of and resource information on the use of computer assisted instruction (CAI) in California public schools are presented under the following headings: (1) definition of CAI, (2) effectiveness of CAI, (3) obstacles to the use of CAI, (4) the turnaround in CAI acceptance and use, (5) instructional potential of CAI, and (6) how to obtain information on CAI. Subtopics discussed in these sections include drill and practice, problem solving, simulations, and tutorial formats; cost and availability of computers, curriculum quality, adverse attitudes; shifting economies, increasing expertise, changing attitudes; computer capacity, computer graphics; and computer demonstrations, other educators, computer programing, shopping for computers.
