Intended for teachers, authors, and publishers of children's educational materials, this book presents a list of words used by elementary school children in their creative or uncontrolled writing. The list is based on the writing samples of approximately 3,000 children, grades one through six, that were collected during a one-year period. Organized by grade level, the samples were selected randomly and all words were counted, including abbreviations, and contractions. The body of the book contains an alphabetical listing of the 7,357 different words used more than one time. Columns beside each word show the frequency of use of that word by grade level and by total usage. To facilitate a lexical count, all regular inflected forms are indented under the base form and the frequency of use is included. A list of words that were used only one time is appended. (MAI)
