Anthropological methods of classroom observation were combined with the results of student responses to three questionnaires in a study of classroom learning environments. The questionnaires were: Learning Environment Inventory, Class Activities Questionnaire, and ALP (Authenticity, Legitimacy, Productivity) Ethos Instrument. Although the classroom observations were of little aid in the interpretation of individual items or scales, it was judged that apparent discrepancies between classroom observations and questionnaire responses lead to a deeper and more accurate interpretation of the classroom environment. For example, although the class in "Urban and Future Studies" was rated high in "diversity" and "cohesiveness" and discussions were observed to be vigorous, it was rated low in "satisfaction." It was judged that class discussions lacked sufficient goal direction to bring closure or create challenge. This conclusion would not have been reached on the basis of one method alone. Thus combining the two methods may be less costly than extensive educational anthropological observation and more productive than questionnaire data alone. (CTM)
