Described in this study is a two-year experimental program in teacher education which provided 14 student teachers with opportunity to experiment with the process of schooling and to learn from it. As a result, six community-based vacation schools were created. Specific sections of the book deal with: (1) the challenge of the times (late sixties) which helped foster the program; (2) the response to the challenge, including a description of the program, its goals, the schoolmakers, and the tasks to be accomplished; (3) specific reports from the six "minischools"; (4) perspectives on schoolmaking, including a retrospective look at the program as well as a look to the future. The text reviews the students' work in assessing needs, establishing objectives, making administrative and curricular decisions, and implementing and evaluating programs. In addition to examining the multidimensional thrust of the programs at the time it was in process, this study also determined long-range effects by contacting the participants five years later. (DS)
