Holding Power and Graduates. Kentucky Public and Non-Public High Schools, May, 1972 Classes. 17th Annual Report.
Kentucky State Dept. of Education, Frankfort. Div. of Educational Research.
In 1972 Kentucky's 299 public high schools produced 41,040 graduates, or 70.2% of the total number of 1968-69 ninth graders. The 51 non-public high schools graduated 3,806 students, or 77.2% of their 1969 ninth graders. Compared to the class of 1960, the increase in number of graduates was 15,319 or 59.6%. Directly attributable to increased holding power is 5,020 or approximately one in nine 1972 graduates. Of the 299 complete high schools, 21 (or 7.0%) had graduating classes of less than 30. Primary data sources are principals' annual reports, superintendents' end of year reports, and the "Biennial Report of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction". Three basic tables in Part I provide an overview of the number and whereabouts of 1972 graduates of all Kentucky public and non-public high schools, separately and combined. Also given is a comprehensive overview by county and region of total ninth grade enrollment, graduates, and total graduates to college. Part II shows trends in holding power by summarizing data on ten graduating classes of public, non-public and combined high schools from 1963 to 1972 and includes data on survival rates and whereabouts of graduates. An analysis of relationship in school size, ninth grade enrollment, number of graduates, and graduates entering college is presented. Relative county standings are shown in measures of holding power, graduates, and survival rate of ninth grade to college. (DS)
