Holding Power and Graduates. Kentucky Public and Non-Public High Schools, May, 1971 Classes. 16th Annual Report.
Kentucky State Dept. of Education, Frankfort. Div. of Educational Research.
In 1971 Kentucky's 291 public high schools produced 39,004 graduates, or 70.1% of the 1967-68 ninth grade enrollment. From the 53 non-public high schools there were 3,966 graduates, or 78.5% of the 1,968 ninth graders. Forty-two percent of all graduates enrolled in colleges or universities. Compared to the class of 1960, the increase in number of graduates is 13,692 or 46.8%. Directly attributable to increased holding power are 4,399, or one of ten 1971 graduates. Of the 291 complete high schools, 24 (or 8.2%) had graduating classes of less than 30. Primary data sources are principals' annual reports, superintendents' end of year reports, and the "Biennial Report of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction". Part I of the document features tables showing the number and whereabouts of 1971 graduates of public and non-public high schools, separately and combined. A summary by counties of 1967-68 ninth grade enrollment, 1971 graduates, and total students reported enrolling in college is included. Part II compares trends in holding power by citing survival rates and graduate whereabouts for graduating classes in the ten year period from 1962-71. Size of graduating classes and the relationships of school size, ninth grade enrollment, and graduates entering college is given. Relative county standings are seen in tables showing holding power, graduates, and survival rate of ninth grade to college. (DS)
