Day Care: Facilities and Equipment.
Campbell, Sheila; And Others
This collection of 4 bilingual papers on facilities and equipment in day care centers is part of a series of papers on various aspects of day care published by the Canadian Department of Health and Welfare. Each paper is presented in both English and French. Paper I, concerning space and equipment in the playground, consists of short lists of requirements for amount and quality of space, and quality, arrangement and use of equipment. Paper II deals with the role of equipment in day care centers. Discussion focuses on (1) the role of specific types of indoor and outdoor equipment in children's potential physical, mental and social development; (2) the design, function, color, size, weight, and versatility of equipment; (3) standards for evaluating the quality of indoor and outdoor equipment; and (4) guidelines for refinishing old furniture for use in day care centers. Paper III is an outline of a presentation on designing and evaluating space for group programs. It includes goals for using space in meeting the needs of children, parents, and the staff; suggestions for evaluating use of space; and techniques for designing classroom activity centers. Paper IV, also in outline form, focuses on criteria for choosing materials and equipment, kinds of materials to be provided, use of materials, and kinds of materials that overcome the handicaps of a limited budget and lack of storage space.
