The formal and informal administrative structures and channels of authority at Iowa Lakes Community College were investigated through a questionnaire administered to the college's board of directors, central administration, department chairpersons, student services staff, student senate, and faculty. The questionnaire asked respondents to identify the type of governance model at work at the college; the person most likely to be contacted in a number of situations; and areas of influence of particular members in the administrative structure. Data were treated using a sociometric measurement of frequency ranking by group as well as by the total population. With regard to the formal structure, findings revealed: a majority of respondents in each group were aware of formal lines of authority; each group relied heavily upon their immediate supervisor for advice and information; a majority of respondents were able to identify correctly the office responsible for particular duties; a significant minority did not strictly follow formal channels in seeking advice. In regard to the informal structure, it was found that there were several individuals who were generally respected for their expertise in any one of several areas. Thus, there were several sources of help and assistance available in day-to-day operations.
