Research Training at the University of Oklahoma: An Opinion Survey.
Trotsky, Ivan
The extent to which research training is needed by Master of Public Administration (MPA) graduates at the University of Oklahoma, Advanced Programs, was investigated through the administration of a questionnaire to 38 August 1977 MPA degree recipients. The questionnaire contained 13 questions concerning where the student took most of his courses; what research courses he took; his opinions on research training; his job or position title; and his comments on research training. Conclusions of the study included: research training should be included at the MPA level; the research problems course was the single most valuable course for training and understanding of research techniques; almost two-thirds of the MPA graduates took other research-oriented courses in addition to the research problems course; a master's thesis or two research projects were not desirable programs required for the MPA degree; and the ideal preparation for research training would be a research oriented course(s) in addition to the research problems course. A literature review includes the following topics: public administration, curriculum, research, and value of the MPA degree. A sample questionnaire, initial letter, followup letter, and bibliography are appended. (SW)
