The need and strategies for foreign language educators to reach out beyond the classroom to communicate to all relevant groups about the benefits of foreign language study are discussed. The central focus is school and community relations, including communication with counselors, administrators, and school boards. Teacher-student relations, interactions with teachers of other disciplines, and interdisciplinary programs affect the public relations of foreign language study. A review of public relations efforts on behalf of language study in the United States is provided. Various elements that comprise the "community" are analyzed. Involving the entire community, the public at large, can take the form of community-wide festivals, broadcast commercials, and activities of professional foreign language associations. (SW)
