Guidance for Androgyny.
McComb, Bettie Y.; Cash, Ralph E.
This booklet contains two papers on sex role identification and a description of a Big Brothers program to provide male models for boys whose fathers no longer live with them. The first paper explores the ways that children learn and confirm their sex roles. A rationale for the development of more androgynous sex roles is also presented. The second paper explores the potential effects of identifying with and therefore adopting mannerisms, attitudes, and emotional responses characteristic of a person of the other sex. The last paper provides some guidelines for counselors who wish to initiate a Big Brothers program. Sample letters are included for surveying elementary teachers for a list of boys whose fathers are not in the home; for sending information, application, and permission sheets to the elementary boys' mothers' for surveying the Big Brothers to determine their interests and hobbies; and for inviting the Little Brothers' Mothers to a get-together with the "Brothers."
