ESEA Title I Programs that Work.
South Carolina State Dept. of Education, Columbia. Office of Federal Programs.
Descriptions of ten reading, mathematics and readiness programs chosen for statewide dissemination in South Carolina are presented in this document. The programs were selected following a study funded by Title I and conducted to serve 127,702 children in local South Carolina school districts. Each was found to provide solutions to critical educational needs in a local school district and each worked effectively with children in learning situations. Descriptions include the programs' location and scope, instructional approach, program operation, and materials and supplies. In some, cost, success factors, exportability assessment and information contacts are also included. The programs selected as the most successful in developing readiness skills covered grades 2 through 6, those chosen for reading were designed for grades 1 through 7, and those considered exemplary for mathematics were designed for grades 1 through 7, and those considered exemplary for mathematics were implemented in grades 2 through 8. This document also describes a support project involving elementary guidance counselors and concludes with a summary of parent and community roles in the planning and operation of programs in the public schools.
