Individual Demand for Education. Analytical Report.
Harnqvist, Kjell
This document presents a framework for the study of individual demand for education. It also presents an analysis of research findings and applies these findings to recent educational trends and changes in Sweden. The first chapter provides data showing that the demand for higher education in industrialized countries has increased greatly during the past 20 years. Chapter two discusses the problems of predicting and planning for changing enrollments. In chapter three, a schema on the process of occupational choice is used to identify explanatory factors for educational decisions. An individual's decisions are in part seen as a compromise between his preferences for, and his expectancies of, a certain education. Research reviewed in chapter four reveals first that occupational motives strongly influence choice of education; and secondly, that a student's confidence in his own choice is dependent on his family background. Chapters five and six discuss the influence on educational choice of such factors as sex and intelligence. Chapters seven and eight discuss the influence of factors such as school admission rules and geographic availability. A case study of recent educational trends in Sweden is analyzed in chapter nine. The concluding chapter states that planning for adjustment and change of the educational system requires efficient feedback from the system and a better understanding of factors influencing individual demand. Bibliographic information is given. (Author/BC)
