During 1977 and 1978, Black Hawk College, Moline, Illinois, served as one of eleven national demonstration models in the development of community college-coordinated, community-based discussion forums. In fall 1977 the college was joined by twenty-seven co-sponsoring community organizations in holding nine town meetings to discuss topics suggested by the Course by Newspaper (CbN) "Crime and Justice in America." In spring 1978 the college and 17 other community organizations sponsored six town meetings and four film discussions in a series entitled "The Impact of Mass Media on American Life" that paralled the CbN "Popular Culture: Mirror of American Life." The Black Hawk College model was unique among the demonstration models in the following ways: leadership and responsibility for the projects came totally from within the college's traditional university parallel faculty; articles written by the faculty provided a local perspective on the national CbN essays; an attempt was made to reach results, to formulate solutions, and to publicize them; and the projects were co-sponsored by the state district library system and member public libraries. Both projects resulted in several spin-off activities, especially among community co-sponsoring organizations and between these organizations and the college. (Author/MB)
