Approximately 1,000 dropout/stopout (DOSO) students from the University of California at San Diego were surveyed in January 1978 to determine their demographic characteristics and the factors influencing their decision to dropout/stopout. The population consisted of students enrolled in winter or spring of 1977 but who did not receive degrees and did not return in fall 1977. The results suggest that efforts to decrease the DOSO rate should concentrate in three areas: (1) festering positive attitudes among all university community members to improve social life, a communal or familial atmosphere; (2) informing students of available services, academic options, and career options, and stressing the student's reponsibility to learn of and choose among his options; and (3) developing broader course offerings within existing departments and programs.
