A number of problems confronting the foreign language teacher in the secondary school classroom are discussed, and strategies (not necessarily solutions) are offered for coping with them. Problems were selected on the basis of the authors' experiences as state supervisors and as a result of letters of inquiry to classroom teachers and local and state foreign language supervisors. Strategies are based on field observations, feedback from teachers and supervisors, and a review of the literature. The following problems are discussed: maintaining enrollments in advanced classes; teaching combined classes; selecting a junior high/middle school exploratory offering; coordinating the foreign language sequence; lack of support for the foreign language program; teaching the handicapped student; teaching the culturally disadvantaged student; accommodating the needs of the occasional student of limited English-speaking ability; and lack of opportunities for professional growth.
