A distinction is made in the meaning of schooling and learning, and characteristics that define lifelong learning and ideas that are not consistent with the concept of lifelong learning are presented. Characteristics of lifelong learners include being goal-directed, assuming increasing responsibility for being self-directed, possessing the skills essential for learning, being active rather than passive, having positive-directed motivation, and having a self-concept that supports self-confidence. A discussion of the nature of learning and the potential for learning thoughout the life span includes the impact of early learning, stages of cognitive development conceived by Piaget, and the developmental stages conceived by Erikson. It is pointed out that lifelong learning may be pursued within an institutional setting or independently and that it is accessible, flexible, and continuous. Changes in foreign language education that can add to lifelong learning opportunities are specified. (SW)
