This package has been developed as a resource guide and training aid to assist school administrators who want to improve school-community relations, to involve people meaningfully in decision-making, and to create learning experiences of quality in the community's lifelong educational process. The guidebook lists steps for identifying formal and informal community leaders, community problems, and community resources. A detailed plan is outlined for recruiting, training, and supervising volunteer interviewers. These interviewers conduct short interviews with those in formal community leadership positions and those with less formal influence. Interviewers ask community leaders to list helpful, successful, and representative community people. Respondents are also asked to identify important local problems as well as resources that should be used in dealing with community problems. Information gathered can be used to improve school-community communications, to facilitate change, to orient new administrators, to provide current information about communities undergoing rapid growth, and to select advisory committee members.
