The Summer Food Program (SFP) is a federally funded program designed to feed needy children during school vacations from May through September. Children may be fed breakfasts, lunches, and suppers, plus two snacks, up to seven days a week. All meals must be served free to all children. The program provides an opportunity to simultaneously improve a child's nutrition when school is out, while distributing more money and jobs in low-income communities. This guide is designed to provide advocates with a briefing in basic program information and a suggested "blueprint" for implementing the SFP at the local level. Specific monitoring steps are listed.
