A school climate questionnaire was developed and administered to 1,959 students in a sample of 24 Massachusetts high schools. Related questionnaires were administered in eight of these schools to 500 teachers, administrators, and support staff. School climate is defined as feelings and opinions about various aspects of the school and how it operates. Questions involved three domains identified as relationships, personal development, and organization that included 13 variables altogether. There were wide variations between the results for different schools, with city schools showing the most variation. Administrators tended to rate school climate more favorably than did teachers, and students rated climate less favorably. Relationships were found between various student characteristics and ratings for the 13 climate variables. Similarly, certain types of school tended to be rated higher than other types; they were characterized by lower student enrollments, higher percentages of college bound students, higher expenditures per student, and flexible scheduling.
